KNOWLEDGE OF ISLAM

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE FOR ALL ACTIVE MEMBERS

Each and every one of us should know about our way of life (Islam) very well and with certainty and clarity. Every active member of dawah club is expected, to the very minimum, to go through and master the materials of 'Knowledge of Islam' page.

Important Note to Always Remember:

Our goal is to follow the Guidance of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) found in
(1) Quran and
(2) in Quran's living example (Prophet Mohammad-pbuh) which is recorded in the authentic Hadith collections
--according to the understanding and practice of the "Pious predecessors (mainly the Sahaabah and the two successive generations)".

**The information provided in this section (Knowledge of Islam) are suggestions based on thorough research on our part to reach that goal. We have tried to use sources and scholars which and who provide detailed analysis on a particular topic with sound references.

**If you are not comfortable with certain books, websites or scholars (based on unfamiliarity, previous experience on other topic, preconceived notion or simply informed with wrong information), we humbly request you to make your decision after going through the materials provided here. Some of you may not agree with everything from a source or a scholar, and that is fine. Feel free to leave those particular opinions/comments that you are not comfortable for more sound ones.

**Finally, just because we used a scholar (or source) for a certain topic doesn't mean that we take everything from him. If you do not agree with our views on materials provided or do not like any of the scholar we used for a particular topic, we humbly request (please contact us) your kind advice and suggestion for a better option with sound references.

It is extremely important that every active Daaee (in fact every Muslim) have a clear and proper understanding of our Aqidah (fundamentals of Islam). The six fundamentals of Islam summarizes the core beliefs of Islam. Those are also known as " Arkan al-Imaan" or " Creed of Islam" or "Articles of beliefs of Islam". Proper knowledge and understanding of these articles build a strong foundation of Islam in each one of us as a Muslim. An individual who doubts any of these articles cannot be considered a Muslim.

  • (1) Belief in Allah (Tawhid or Oneness of Allah)
  • (2) Belief in the Books of Allah
  • (3) Belief in the Messengers of Allah
  • (4) Belief in Angels of Allah
  • (5) Belief in the Day of Judgement
  • (6) Belief in Qadar
  • Detailed discussions of these articles are in the following sections. But the very first thing we will do before any further discussions is to understand "why are we here on earth" or "why did Allah created us" or "what is the Purpose of our life".

  • The most important question in life is " what is the purpose of life?"
  • As Muslims the answer is clear and simple. Allah tells us in Quran that He created us to worship Him.
"And I (Allah) did not create the jinn and humankind except to worship Me'" (Quran 51:56)
  • **That is it! The sole purpose of being on this earth is to only worship Allah. There is no ambiguity in this or in anything else in Islam.

It explains many aspects of the Quran and help us understand it. Hadith were also memorized and recorded meticulously by the Prophet’s companions and passed on to successive generations. There are eight widely used Hadith Collections and of them Six are most famous. Every one us should have some basic knowledge of hadith, the famous collections and classification of hadith. Generally regarded as the single most authentic collection of Ahadith. Sahih Al-Bukhari covers almost all aspects of life in providing proper guidance from the messenger of Allah. In Imam Bukhari's "Al-Jami-al-Sahih" (popularly known as Sahih Al Bukhari) the Imam (born within 180 years of Prophet's death) recorded all the Sayings of the Prophet which he found to be genuine after thorough examination and scrutiny. He spent sixteen years in research and examined more than sixty thousand Sayings from which he selected only sayings whose genuineness and accuracy he established beyond the slightest doubt. **Prophet Muhammad (saws), the Last and Final Messenger of Allah.
** The Prophet (saws) lived his life according to Allah's Guidance (Quran- the Last and Final revelation) and set an example for us to follow until the Last-Day.
** The Prophet (saws) was the perfect slave and worshipper of Allah. And in him we find the best and only example to follow.
** All other earlier prophets (and messengers) were sent to certain people, their message and example they set were for a certain period of time. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was sent to everyone and until the Last-Day.
**The coming of Prophet Muhammad (saws) with final revelation (Quran) invalidated all other earlier revelations. Even though we are to believe in the existence of those revelations, but in no way we are to follow those revelations or follow the examples and teachings found in those.
** It is important to understand that we are required to believe in the earlier prophets (and messengers) and the revelations but we are required to follow only Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the Final revelation (Quran).
**Therefore it is very important for all of us to know about the life of the Prophet (pbuh). How else will we follow his footsteps to draw close to Allah? Through his biography and his Sunnah ('his way' -recorded in Hadith collections) we get to know the greatest man ever lived and set an example for all of us to follow.
**It is also very important to know the Sirah (biography) from authentic sources only, otherwise we will be learning of things he never did and thus will be misguided instead of guided.

    (1) Prophet of Islam by Dr. Mahdi Rizqullah Ahmad ( ISBN #9789960969039) This work on the life history of the Prophet (S) stands out from other works because every detail mentioned has been traced back to original sources, whose authenticity has been discussed extensively in the footnotes. A must read (no exceptions) for all serious students.

    (2) The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarkpuri ( ISBN #9781591440703) is one every muslim should read. This biography is less detailed but precise and based on authentic sources. Online: http://www.muslim-library.com (pdf version)

    (3) Noble life of the Prophet by Dr. Ali Muhammad Sallabi (ISBN #9789960967868) is a more detailed biography. A good read for serious students. Online: https://www.kalamullah.com/muhammad.html
